I have heard this sentence at least five times in the last two weeks. The peppers in question are called shishito peppers, and they are very much in season! I had my first taste of shishitos last year at the Alembic, and now am noticing them everywhere from farmers markets to sushi restaurants. The peppers are served either blistered or fried, sometimes with a miso dressing, sometimes with simply...

From the Wall Street Journal: “So maybe we should pay a bit more attention to people’s eating habits when we first meet them. That’s what Kathy Schwartz did. The Seattle resident once ended a relationship with a man because of the way he ate French onion soup. He had ordered a bowl one day at a restaurant, but found the typically stringy, melted Gruyere cheese to be a challenge....

Tomorrow is my birthday.
One of the two days each year when calories don’t count. First stop: Ad Hoc, Thomas Keller’s casual Yountville family-style restaurant for brunch. The last time I ventured to Yountville for brunch I was treated to steak-and-eggs huevos rancheros on cornmeal waffles. If they can figure out how to turn fried chicken into brunch, I promise to never brunch anywhere else in Napa county...

The best way to figure out where to eat in a new city is to ask a chef! These three restaurants featured in T+L’s 100 Best City Restaurants are three of my SF favorites. Also of note: I love that the article features cities from around the world but leads with New York, followed by San Francisco.

Chow's 10 Ways To Photograph Food
Given my penchant for photographing most everything I eat, the title of this piece on food photography was intriguing. And it opened up with a Scanwich reference. It covers the range of commercial food photography but leaves out my favorite — the renegade-style on-the-go capturing made even more famous by Yelp and FoodSpotting. Perhaps they’ll recognize it as a valid form of food...

Ultimate Happiness: 2010 Edition
I’ve been lucky enough to eat a lot of food at a lot of amazing places over the past year, but my New Year’s Day breakfast pretty much sums up what I want to eat: put some sort of cured meat and/or an egg on it, and it’s my new favorite food. Examples: poached eggs on grits, carbonara pizza, Momofuku ramen, spring pea and guanciale pizza.

I accidentally ate foie gras the other day.
…and I still have some guilt about it. I didn’t realize it was part of a duck dish I ate at Momofuku Ssam Bar .
